Hints for Bandaging Your Horse's Legs
Hints for Bandaging Your Horse's Legs
Here are some handy hints and checks that you can do to ensure a perfect and comfortable fit and wrap.
Always use as much bandage as possible to achieve the best results.
Keep the pressure consistent but avoid using excess pressure, particularly around the knee.
Ensure the bandage isn't too tight by practising your technique. It is helpful if you practise bandaging your own legs, or those of a friend, so you can feel how much pressure you have applied.
While you don't want the bandages to be too tight, you also don't want them to be too loose as they can slip and cause injury to the horse. If they slip to a different part of the horse's leg it may then cause the bandage to tighten and to restrict the area or the circulation.
If you are bandaging your horses for medical reasons, always be sure to change your bandages regularly. You will need to check there is no dirt, stick etc caught under the bandage that could cause friction or injury, and also to ensure the bandages do not slip or restrict circulation. Always consult with your veterinarian or health care professional.
To avoid the bandage slipping, secure the bandage with elasto-wrap or tape at the top and bottom of the bandage.
